Papers, 1898-1899.

This collection includes 26 photographs taken during the period of 1898-1899. Some are photographs of officers and soldiers in the Spanish-American War, particularly the North Carolina Volunteer Infantry in front of army tents. There are also photographs of the U.S.S. MAINE'S wreck in Havana's harbor, the graves of the victims of the MAINE, and the mausoleum of the firefighters at the Columbus Cemetery, Havana. Other photographs show scenes in Havana, including the Cathedral, Morro Castle, the Templete, Central Park, La India Park, the stockade of La Trocha, and the removal of Queen Isabel II's monument to be erected elsewhere. The collection also contains some funeral scenes of both poor and affluent Cubans.

Maine (Battleship)

USS Maine (BB/2C), an armored battle ship, was blown up in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. A court of inquiry was unable to obtain evidence regarding the cause of the ship's destruction. In August 1910, Congress authorized the raising of the ship. The hull was refloated and towed into the Gulf of Mexico where it was sunk with honors on March 16, 1912.
